My name is Jessica

but since I started being active online I go by “thegirlcansmile”

I’m a scandinavian girl that has painted traditionally my entire life. A few years ago I tried digital painting and found my own style by combining the two. Later on I taught myself photomanipulation so now I often combine all the medias. I like to either start or finish with traditional paint and use a lot of scanned textures and paints. I tend to combine painting with my wacom tablet with traditional acrylics, oil, watercolor and pencils.

Why you are making these surreal arts only

That’s a good question, I think my works appear more surreal cause I like to balance out light and dark, good and evil, human and inhuman. I like the idea of something that’s realistic yet almost unreal, whimsical or magical or even scary.

How you come in painting/art field

Art came naturally to me, I always been interested in it, both admiring it and creating it so it’s one of the things that makes me happiest in life. I tend to seek out art in everything, not just paintings but life.

Do you have social profile or page?

I have a facebook but hardly uses it : https://sv-se.facebook.com/people/Thegirlcansmile-Art/100014345136085

Which is your first art work

My first artwork was probably when I was 2 or 3 years old and tried to paint our two black dogs in watercolor :)

How much time you spend in a week

I paint or create whenever I have free time. I like to bring sketch paper with me wherever I go, cause I get inspired going to places and taking in new experiences and emotions.

Tools of work

My online tools are my #wacom tablet, corel painter and #photoshop. In traditional media I use all kinds of paint and love to combine it in ways that perhaps doesn’t always make sense.

Do you have qualified degree in relevant field?

I have no degree yet, I am self taught. I am also not currently working with my art, just doing it as a passion but that might change later on.

What you do other activities in daily life

My other hobbies include spending time with people I love, being out in nature, reading, dancing, photography, animals, listening to music and watching movies.

A message for newer designers/artists

If I could advice anybody that just started with art it would be to listen to your own creative voice. Be inspired, progress, learn, but be original, be you. You can’t do anything better than being who you naturally are.

Your inspired artists

I don’t have a specific artist that inspires me more than others, I tend to get inspiration from the world, experiences, feelings. I often use my own emotions as fuel in the creative process. Be it joy or sorrow.
